Jammu and Kashmir Police on Sunday that the gunfight going on for past two days in Handwara area of Kupwara was in an “advanced stage”, suggesting that it might end soon.
“Handwara encounter update: #Operation is in the #advanced #stage. Further #details shall follow,” police said on Twitter.
Four forces’ personnel, including two policemen and CRPF personnel, were killed in the gunfight on Friday and several others wounded.
Reports said that two houses, two cowsheds and a tin shed have been razed to ground by the forces. “The militant who was earlier presumed to be dead is firing on the forces and changing his position,” said a senior police official.
“The area is very congested and militants have a strategy to shift from one house to another. We are going slow,” a police official said, wishing not to be named.
Defence sources said that para-commandos have been called in to assist the personnel of army, CRPF and police already engaged in encounter with the militants since Friday morning. “The para commandos reached the gun-battle spot early Saturday morning,” a source said.
The elite para-commandos from 3rd and 9th battalion joined the already strengthened posse of government forces comprising army’s 22 Rashtriya Rifles, 92 battalion CRPF and J&K police.
