Junaid Matto  Gets Poll Code Violation Notice Over  Mobile Phone Distribution Among SMC Employees

Srinagar, April 12 : Days before Srinagar parliamentary constituency goes for polls, Election Commission has issued a notice to Peoples Conference leader and city Mayor Junaid Matto for violating the model code of conduct by distributing smartphones among SMC employees.

Matto has been served a notice by the poll panel after on a filed by a polling agent Showkat Ahmad Mir and asked to explain his conduct before the commission.

“The complaint stands filed by Mr. Showkat Ahmad Mir chief Election Agent of the contesting candidate conference to the Chief Electoral officer JK that you have distributed smart mobile phones among the SMC corporations and while monitoring the social media it stands verified the status of which you have uploaded on your Twitter handle@ Mayor of Srinagar(copy enclosed),” the notice read.

“Whereas the object of model code is that energy to do good by any person in power should not be used on the eve of elections so as to drive any benefit during elections the same has been upheld by the Hon’ble supreme court of India in Ghassi Ram vs Dal Singh and others ACSE,” it added.

The poll panel citing the terms of observation of Supreme court of India found Matto of violating the model code of conduct and asked him to deposit all the mobile phones before the commission.

“…you are hereby directed to immediately deposit all the smartphones distributed by you with this office by today evening and also to explain your conduct,” the election commission directed in the notice. (GNS)
