Hurriyat (M) demands release of journalist Asif Sultan
All Parties Hurriyat Conference (M) has strongly condemned the arrest of an assistant editor of a weekly magazine Kashmir Narrator, Asif Sultan stating that the act deserves highest forms of condemnation and amounts to assault on freedom of press.
“The journalists working in Kashmir have always been targeted for highlighting the oppression being unleashed on the people of the region over the past three decades,” Hurriyat (M) said in a statement issued to GNS.
Demanding immediate release of Asif Sultan, the Hurriyat (M) strongly condemned the police act of seizing Asif’s laptop, mobile phone and castigated the police for giving “false assurances” to his family members that he will be released soon.
It strongly denounced the “policies of repression” being unleashed across Kashmir by forces “to instill fear among the people of all ages”.
The amalgam said, “On one hand various ploys have been employed to force the people into submission by crushing their rights, and on the other, the peaceful programs of resistance leaders are being disallowed by using the force. Even the heavy deployment is being made around masjids to prevent people from offering obligatory prayers.”
The Hurriyat (M) also termed the frequent cordon and search operations in various areas of south Kashmir and the door to door searches as “totally unjustified” saying these are aimed at instilling fear among people to prevent them from demanding their birth right. (GNS)
