Fresh snowfall worries apple growers in south Kashmir’s Shopian

Shopian: Apple growers and orchardists in south Kashmir areas are apprehensive due to the ongoing fresh snowfall in valley.
Orchardists said that 60 percent of their harvested crop is stranded in orchardists and at many places it is lying on ground in orchards. They said that the snow may sustain damages to the fruits.
Even at quit a few places orchardists are yet to pick apples which according to experts will fall due to the snow.
Talking to Kashmir Reader many orchardists said that they were apprehensive about the safety of their apple crop due to the inclement weather.
Meanwhile, experts said that there is no need to worry till the temperature is above zero.
“Orchardists should cover the fruit which is lying on ground with polythene sheets and they should also cover the boxes with polythene sheets,” An expert of the horticulture department said.
He added that there is no need to worry till temperature remains around one degree Celsius.” If the temperature post snowfall goes below zero, it may cause harm to fruits, so it’s better to cover fruits, “he said.
Experts said snow itself would not harm the fruit but if temperature goes minus then it may cause damages.
