Cold wave conditions in Valley, light rain and snow forecast

SRINAGAR: The Meteorological department on Monday predicted light rain and snowfall in most parts of Kashmir Valley in the next 24 hours.
“After a day of dry weather today, light rain and snowfall are expected to lash most parts of the valley in the next 24 hours,” a Srinagar Met centre official said.
He added that an abrupt drop in temperature has led to cold wave conditions in the region. The day temperature, according officials in Srinagar, on Monday was recorded at a maximum of 7.1 degrees Celsius, which is 12 notches less than the normal. The minimum temperature was 1.8 degrees Celsius.
No rain fell in the Valley on Monday and road traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway was partially restored in evening after being closed most of the day, when a landslide was being cleared at Ramban. “Stranded vehicles will be allowed to move towards their respective destinations on Tuesday,” said an official at the Ramban traffic control room.
The 434-km Srinagar-Leh highway and the historic Mughal Road in southern Kashmir remained closed for the 5th consecutive day on Monday. Officials said that due to accumulation of several feet of snow, which has also frozen at several places due to sub-zero temperatures, the Srinagar-Leh road has become slippery.
The Mughal Road has also been closed for vehicular traffic due to accumulation of snow at various places on the road, officials said.
Train services from Banihal to Baramulla and vice-versa ran on regular schedules on Monday, railway authorities said.
Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded the lowest maximum temperature on Monday at -1.0 degree C. The minimum temperature there was recorded at -5.0 degree C.
In Kupwara district, the minimum temperature dropped to -0.9 while maximum temperature was recorded as 7.4 degree C.
In Pahalgam, the maximum temperature was recorded as 2.8 degree C while the minimum dropped to 0.3 degree C.
Qazigund in south Kashmir recorded 6.8 degree C maximum temperature and the minimum at 0.8 degree C.
