(KNS): Paying glowing tributes to Muzaffar Ahmad Naikoo, who was martyred by government forces at Machoo area of central Kashmir’s Budgam district, Hurriyat Conference (M) Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Friday said Kashmiri youth were sacrificing their lives for a pious cause of setting their nation free from the clutches of oppression, suppression and occupation.
In a statement issued to KNS, Mirwaiz also paid rich tributes to the Sopore Martyrs of January 6, 1993 saying that it was on this day chilling winter day that the government forces set the north Kashmir’s township ablaze and killed 57 innocent civilians, while setting hundreds of homes on fire. He said three years before the Sopore massacre, the government forces had on May 21, 1990 also unleashed a reign of terror by firing on the mourners of Kashmir’s top religious and political leader Shaheed-e-Millat Mirwaiz Moulvi Muhammad Farooq killing 70 persons and critically injuring dozens of others, leaving them maimed for their lives.
Hurriyat (M) Chairman said Kashmiris had continuously been at the receiving end of such brutalities. Zakura, Gaw Kadal, Bijbehara and Chatti Singhpora massacres were just a few examples where people had been butchered mercilessly and that these incidents had left an indelible mark on the psyche of the people as it was impossible for them to nurse their wounds.
Mirwaiz said that as Government of India has shielded the culprits of these massacres rather than punishing them, it was a glaring example of how the Indian State has operated ruthlessly in Kashmir for the past 30 years.
Paying tributes to all the martyrs of Kashmir’s resistance movement from 1931 to the recent martyrs of the 2016 uprising, he said, nations and dignified and thoughtful people always remember their martyrs and their sacrifices and safeguard them till times immemorial.
Mirwaiz said these martyrs had sacrificed their today for the better tomorrow of their fellow beings but as their mission of taking the ongoing resistance movement remained unaccomplished, it was the duty and responsibility of both the people and the resistance leadership to take the resistance movement forward towards the goal of freedom. The APHC Chairman urged the Government of India should give up its obduracy, and accept the reality that it has to address the Kashmir dispute in accordance with the wishes of its people.
